          Peak Name: North Kinsman
Pole system: Three 6 ft fiberglass tree pruning poles that interlock and clip together lashed to a tree.
Suggestions: I think a few more weeks of signup might do it. One big difference between this year and last were the number of folks that had heard of the event. Last year only one group knew of what we were doing. This year many summiters had previous knowledge, two groups knew because they came upon flagholders while hiking in 2002.

Greg just got back from North Kinsman. It was a great day very clear to start with, about 1PM or a little after light clouds obscured the summits. We could seeflags on South Kinsman, Cannon, lafayette and lincoln. Thanks again for your work and making your website available.

After hearing about this mornings flag raising on the radio, I went up to the viewing area and the flag was still there. Good to hear that Jamie brought it up. It was awe inspiring and helped me look forward to this weekends memorial.

When I started that thread, the day Greg put the Flags sign-up sheet on this site, it was just a few simple lines to announce this years event. It’s very amusing to see all the twists and turns and political arguements going on. People slamming one another, I guess thats mandatory on the AMC boards. Hopefully we encouraged a few people to join in the Flags hike through that thread.

I agree with the daybook idea. We will certainly do this next weekend. Dorothy Nash poem is very moving. I should add it to our summit literature along with Frodo’s statement.

Stephen, the good news is also that it was a very good article. It’s a shame about the alphazone mistake. Will they print a misprint statement for the next edition?

in reply to: Summit Handouts? #48890

Last year on Mt Hale we handed out, on a small piece of paper, the mission statement from this website. We brought plenty enough to inform everone that summited. We invited everone to participate by holding the flagpole for a few minutes. The pole was never stayed down by rope, just humans who were every one thankful for the chance to experience the power of the event as well as the power of the wind as they held their nations flag atop the rock pile on Hale. My vote for handouts.

Our group of five arrived at the summit of Mt. Hale shortly before noon and we had the colors flying at 12:01. We had printed out Alpine Zone’s mission statement on strips of paper which we handed out to each person or group that arrived. I must admit that the negative posts I read on the AMC website made me apprehensive about how this would be recieved and if we were imposing on other people’s hiking experience by virtually taking over the summit. I need not have worried at all. At least twenty people joined with us and all were very excited and supportive. Each person participated in holding the flagpole and having their picture taken with the flag.

Just prior to 2 o’clock Scott and Meghan Hayman came into the summit clearing. It was 5 year old Meghan’s first 4000 footer and they were quite excited that they had made it before the flag was taken down. Scott said he could hear the flag whipping in the wind before he ever saw us and knew he was on time. Meghan got a round of applause from all as she stood on Mt. Hales summit cairn with her father. We left the flag up for them to enjoy and waited for their friends Chris and his son Cam(also about 5 years) to summit for their first 4k. Then Ken Hunt arrived with his 10 year old friend Chloe for her first 4k.

I found myself taking out the mission statement to read often during the hike and while with our new friends on the summit. In the parking lot after the hike Nick Blaney, who accompanied his mother Jody, told me that it really hit him, what we were doing, when he saw the flags flying from other summits. We could see flags on South Twin, North Twin and Mt. Bond.

Thanks to all who participated with us and on all the other 48 and to those who wanted to but could not make it. We will never forget Sept 11, 2001 nor those we lost and their families.
