Thanks Ten. I get leave the topic reply notification box checked, so I get email when someone posts to a thread I posted on.

I notice we both did 2002 and 2004 and missed ’03.

It was a brief, but nicely done piece. It didn’t, however, include anything from the FoT48. They did make two mistakes, mispelling my wife’s name and saying that I “scooped up” two kids (they ran out on their own, but maybe the “scoop” was meant as a metaphor?).

The story, text and video, are at: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/12/09/earlyshow/contributors/tracysmith/main660125.shtml

The producer (who seems like a nice guy, and a pro) tells me that the piece is slotted for 7:30AM tomorrow.

Ten – Not sure if you are still following this site – or will get a notification, but I got a call today. The Early Show will run the story this Friday Morning (12/10/04) – they may be able to let me know what time exactly, but haven’t yet.

There were seven 9/11 flags trip reports on http://www.viewsfromthetop.com (check trip reports section).

              I made a trip report to: http://www.thebackpacker.com/trailtalk/thread/33373,-1.php

and some discussion of the trip is also at: http://www.thebackpacker.com/trailtalk/thread/32874,-1.php

Also, while I’m on the topic, CBS’s Early Show interviewed me and my wife in our current home and the house that burned for a story about candle fires. I described the Flags even to the reporter, and sent them pictures from our Flags trip as they were interested in the trip. I’m not sure if they will run the story, let alone use the flags pics or my description of it – but if they do, it would be a great twofer – raising awareness about candle fires (which have doubled in the past 15 years in the US)and publicizing the FOT48.

I think Coberg’s generous offer makes a lot of sense. We could also pass the hat at the next gathering for the 15 dollars and any incidental expenses.

If we do end up pre-paying for food and a place to gather, I think it makes sense to try to build in a margin for safety and possible expense money.

I already commented, somewhat negatively and got some agreement – but to address the questions.

-Should we go there again next year? Why or why not?
IMHO: It would pay to look elsewhere, but I would try it again it if they agree to put on more kitchen and wait staff. This might take a deposit. I’d be willing to put some of my money on the line. Mine was not the only group that went elsewhere to eat.

-What was your favorite meal? Beverage?
I’ve been happy with everything I ate there in the past.

-What did you like most about the place?
That we pretty much had the room to ourselves.

                  -What did you like least?
Long waiting for any kind of service.

-What would you like to see done differently next year?
To have the place better prepared for us.

What would you like to see change? (And how will you change it?) As above, maybe a restaurant would committ to preparing better if they had a deposit to back up the head count. I’d chip in for the deposit. Also, if we have deposits – then people will be more committed to coming.

Four of us spent about 15 dollars total (all on beer and wine). I didn’t drink anything – I lost patience trying to get an order in. We would have eaten at Mooseland if there had been less of a wait for food. We spent another 80 on food elsewhere – probably would have spent that at Mooseland if we had stayed.

Thanks for that Greg. This shows real fortitude on your part. Of course, I cancelled out last year when my son and I had slight fevers a couple days in advance of the trip. It’s funny how events can change your mind about what constitutes an obstacle.

It was great to have this trip – and the cause behind it – to give me a concrete goal in doing the rehab work.

Excellent! – kudos to the organizers and everyone who participated.

I’m guessing what happened with Mooseland is that they were happy to have the extra business, but didn’t want to take the risk of investing in extra help or preparations. On reflection this is understandable – the gathering had only been there once before and if not many people showed, Mooseland would lose out.

Wherever we go next year, we might offer to make a deposit as a guarantee of X dollars worth of business… with some of the deposit being lost depending on how far short of the goal we were. That would reduce the risk for scheduling extra staff on the floor and in the kitchen. I’d be happy to kick in towards a deposit.

The weather was perfect and the loop through Avalon, Field, Willey and Tom was great. The spirit on the trail was excellent.

I was really impressed by the way FoT48 organized the event. The shirts (I bought one) and the pens were lots of fun. The folks we met up with at Mooseland were great. It was fun to see familiar faces and see the faces that come with some of the names I’ve gotten to know.

We weren’t at all happy with the Mooseland Grill. I’ve eaten there before and it’s been fine, but they were in no way prepared for us when we got there a little after six and a little grouchy about it. When we got there we were told the wait for a table was about 40 minutes and the wait for food would be about the same. It was a struggle to get something to drink. One of us left immediately. The other four were hungry and didn’t stay long either. I hope we have a different place next year or negotiate a different set-up with Mooseland.

This is Pedxing and I approved those messages. I mean. I posted the two posts above, oddly, despite signing in both times I was posted as “guest” – I re-logged and will see what happens this time.
