      Greg,

Yes you spelled his name correctly.

As for the title, I vote for “Hikers remember 9/11 in New Hampshire”. People who don’t hike will not know what the 48 reference is.

        Greg,

Looks great, but that line was actually written by RJ. You should replace my name with his.

Great Job Stephen! The story covered it all. Don’t worry about the URL error, if someone just types in “Flags on the 48” in most search engines, they will see the correct link.

As for other events. Last year there was “Cops on Top” who were a group of law enforcement people associated with the Highpointers Club. They climbed on all of the state highpoints on (9-11-2002).

Also want to say thanks for stepping up and helping us out this year. You have been a tremendous help 🙂

Only 11 more days to go…

            Hey Greg,

How about setting up a poll? 😀

Hey RBHayes (any relation to the ex prez?)

Out of all of those suggestions (including Mari’s) which one do you feel would likely better accommodate 20+ patriotic smelly hikers looking for some food and some  ?

The most centralized spot in the Whites is probably Twin Mt or maybe Bartlett. Not many places to choose from at either location… The most happening place in Twin Mt is the Pizza Pub, which probably has never seen over 15 customers at the same time… I’m kidding! Maybe 20…. Anyway, do they sell food and  and I guess thats all that counts!

The best locations are in Lincoln/Woodstock or in Gorham/N. Conway. Not much in between. I plan on also attending, where ever the location ends up being… 😀

I plan on posting on VFTT, Backpacker.com, and a few others (also will be sending out emails to most hiking clubs in the Northeast. I have been postponing this until about 4 weeks in advance of the 13th due to what happened last year. After the initial responses, things were quite slow until the final 2 weeks. Scary thing is how often do you hear about Sept 11 these days?

I finally sat down and wrote something. It is a little long for the Q/A, but it is the history of the event. Comments and suggestions are welcome…

The “Flags on the 48” event was established because of a horrific terrorist attack that took place on Sept. 11, 2001.

On Sept. 14th, 2001, several regular posters on the AMC websites’ Hiker Journal Forum banded together and planned a following day hike up Mt Liberty with the biggest flag the could acquire…

On Sept. 15th, 2001, 6 hikers met at the “White House” Trailhead armed with a 96 sq ft American flag, 30 feet of pvc tubing, 100 feet of rope, 2 rolls of duct tape, and a mountainful of pride and determination. At noon the flag was raised on the summit of Mt. Liberty in a tribute to all of the 3000+ innocent people who perished a few days earlier. A small gesture for such a gigantic loss…

The patriotic gesture received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, and a few weeks later a committee formed to establish a larger memorial for the one year anniversary, hence, the Flags on the 48 was born….

On Sept. 14th, 2002, several hundred patriotic compassionate souls embarked on a journey to raise flags on all of the summits of the 48 4,000+ foot mountains in NH. Still just a small gesture for such an incredible loss, but the feedback from all of the participants was overwhelming…

On Sept. 13th, 2003, we will be continuing this memorial to unite the hiking community in a show of support to all of the families and communities who suffered tragic losses that day, and to all of of the people who have died serving this great country to preserve our freedom.

On every mountain top, let freedom ring…

I will most certainly be participating with my soon to be 9 year old daughter. Horrific events that happen to this country need all of the memorialization they can get. We can become so complacent….

Count me in for helping out with the promotional role.

                        Don,

Congratulations! No apologies needed! You have much more significant things on (in) your hands. A horrific thing happened on Sept 11, 2001, but Sept 11, 2002 had many beautiful and positive things take place, including the birth of your son. Be proud, you have a special gift, with a VERY significant birthday. The children of today are the future of tomorrow….

The 7 of us (Kris and Dan, Deb, Deb and Dave, and my 8 year old daughter Shannon) summitted Eisenhower at 11:40am under mostly sunny (windy) skies. We scrambled to put the flag pole together and hoisted it at noon with many guy lines, and spent another 10 minutes just trying to stablize it. After that, “Old Glory” was the dominate presence for the next 2 hours.

We had about 40 other hikers show up, many who had seen the flag from both Pierce and Monroe. Some people were pretty emotional when they arrived, but then again so were we. Lots of people had their pictures taken, and spent time talking and reflecting.

Mt Washington and Mt Monroe were both socked in with clouds when we arrived (everything else was clear). After about an hour, the clouds lifted and we saw a MASSIVE flag pole protruding off of Monroe. Several people also showed up and said “Garret says hi from Monroe”. We could clearly see the towering flagpole on Monroe and the one from Mt Jackson to the south. Awesome sights!

Shortly before we took it all down at 2pm, a large group from RI showed up and as they were leaving for Mizpah broke into “Bye, bye, Miss American pie…..”

We left the summit without a trace at 2:20, and met up with many other hikers at the Woodstock Inn/brewery later on to reflect and reminice. (even compared bushwhacking scars with Michelle, but she had me beat). Most people could see flags from other peaks, especially from Flume and Carrigain. Very memorable day, but all for a never forgetable cause…..

Speaking of thank you’s, without you Greg, don’t know where we would be. You were essential in volunteering to establish the web page, and kept us going thru all of the planning (Thank You). I also want to thank RJ for his expediant updates from the emails, and I am very sorry that you will not be able to attend, but keep in mind, you are also a key person in shaping this event with your ideas and comments.

A very, very special thank you goes out to Gail and Mary-Margret. You two were part of that special day on Mt Liberty, and I will never, ever forget that day, as long as I live. You two are also a huge reason on WHY we are doing this. With all of your constructive ideas and comments, you helped create AND shape this event, and it would not have even become an event without you two.

But we would have nothing but a dream without the 100+ people who have signed up. You are the ones who are willing to make an idea real.
You people rock! Without you passionate patriotic hikers, this event wouldn’t even happen. Hats off to you all, you are the people who care, and want to make a difference.

Lets pray for good weather, that is the key factor now.

I am also planning on heading to the Woodstock Inn Brewrey. Since it will be on a Saturday evening/night, = lots of patrons, I suggest that people wear something “flag” orientated (seems appropriate), so we can identify each other. From what Mari mentioned (red, white, and blue shirt), a flag pin on their shirt, a small flag, flag bumper sticker on your back, Uncle Sam costume (bet you are real drunk if you do this one) Hey MJ, 50 bucks if you do it…… Another location should be established for the Rt 16 area hikers. Any suggestions?

I think that it is a great idea to try and meet up afterwards, though the logistics will be difficult for most. Some peaks take a few hours to climb, some take all day, and for the backpackers, several days. Also people participating come from all directions, and will be heading back in all directions. If you want to try and establish a place, pick something like the Woodstock Inn (Mari’s suggestion), where at least 1/2 of the supporters can reasonably have access to (they also have some awesome home brew, or as Homer Simpson would say, MMMMM Beeeerrrrr)…. Someone should also establish a meeting place on the East side, maybe Gorham, N. Conway or Conway?

PVC tubing works well, because it is strong, light, and you can cut it into smaller sections to carry up. The problem is using the PVC couplings. They are shallow, and do not hold very well even with duct tape. I would reccommend making some support brackets out of aluminum angle. Cut them about a foot long, and use them to support the pvc couplings (2-3 per coupling) by wrapping duct tape around them and the pvc pole.
