I think that would be fine. Get not only some hard-core planners but some casual idea people in there. Or will too many voices make it difficult?

Hey, glad to hear the Hancock idea panned out! I’ll be there. I can’t help on the loggage, though, I don’t have a truck.

You can camp at Lafayette year-round, but the facilities are only open for the summer season. It’s a “primitive” site the other times. I don’t know the details, or what it’s like, but there are several on the various boards who have stayed there in the winter.

Still, a place that’s really open might be better.

I’m still partial to the drive-up campground approach. It allows us to more easily bring in samples of flagpole designs to talk about, photos to look at, stuff to write with/on, etc.

But if the majority likes Carter, I’d certainly be up for it. I absolutely love the place (and I want to climb the Wildcats).

                Welcome, Amy!

At this point, things are kind of in a “watch this space” state – if you read back through this thread, you’ll see that we’re going to do an initial planning session in May. But a lot of information and ideas have been tossed around in various threads here in the Flags on the 48 forum, and I’d encourage you to read them at your leisure to get an idea of what we’re trying to do with the event for the coming September.

I’ll be there. I’ll see what I can do to hype it up, maybe bring along the mission statement from last year and possibly a printed photo montage to drum up initial interest.

Did anyone mention this before? I think one advantage we’ll gain this year is that we won’t be conflicting with the VFTT Gathering. which occupies a lot of area hikers. I believe it is to be the following weekend in 2004. I’ll keep an eye out.

I’m in, and this time I’ll be there on time. If I come up with any new suggestions beyond what I’ve already offered in other threads, I’ll come back with another post. Right now I’m just trying to soothe my aching quads…

One of the huts would be great but then we need to get a commitment for exactly the right number of people and also front the money. So I think I’ll vote for a campground. If the weather’s nice we gather ’round the fire. If it’s bad we find the nearest bar.
                        😀

And maybe then I’ll finally get to use my new car-camping tent!

May might be too early for sites like Sugarloaf or Wild River, but Hancock, Lafayette, and a few others are open year-round.

I’m in agreement. Partitioning off the peaks will definitely help with overseeing the planning, allowing for greater detail. I might break down the list a little differently, basing it a little more on trailhead than destination. Ie, group together Twins, Galehead, Hale, Zealand, Garfield; Tom, Field, Willey with Pierce and Jackson; Ike & Monroe with Washington & Northerns. I have no real justification for this other than thinking that having the same person coordinate hiking in from the north along Rte 3 as well as from Lincoln Woods seemed odd.
                          🙂

I especially think the signup levels will draw more people in. I’m sure there are folks who’d love to commit to hike a summit for this event but would prefer not to have to deal with planning/getting a flag & pole. Now, you’ll be able to sign up for a peak or area and just be there to help out, not have to coordinate.

May 8, eh? Sounds good to me! Is this going to be a gathering in civilization, at a campground, or at a hut?

I like the ideas being thrown around. I’m sure there must be people out there who would do the hike but aren’t prepared to actually provide equipment for the flag raising. Having a “veteran-led group” notion allows a person to sign up for a peak and ensure that it is covered, and then open it up for others to join in on that summit to support it, but who don’t have to worry about how to build a flagpole, etc.

In fact, I think some wording with the signups might be helpful to emphasize that the signups are the guarantee of at least a hiker & flag, but that others are welcome to join, anywhere from sharing the hike to just arriving separately on the summit.

A planning party is a wicked good idea.

I just got mine as well – they look fantastic! Well done, and an excellent reminder of what we all did last month.

Now to figure out how to get it onto the pack….
                              😀

That looks great! The scene translated wonderfully to the patch and the shape works very well.

I originally wanted the year, but as I look at the patch I realize it will get awfully busy with the year in there and detract from the rest of the text. And since you’ll have so many extra it only makes sense to keep them for future years and participants.

Is it just me, or do the poles look like little A-frames in the actual stitched version?

Those are *very* cool. I’m definitely in (I’ll email you, Frodo).

Do we want to have “2003” on there to be year-specific, or just go with the general case of participation in the event?

I’d also be happy to help subsidize.
