Ok…file this one under “life sucks”…..but..

Have to withdraw from the Planning Meeting and I am not all that thrilled about the reason. šŸ˜„

My friendā€™s bachelor party, I was told today, is scheduled for that week-end (rafting trip). Although I am tempted to tell the person who is organizing I am busyā€¦this guy (groom) did make it to my party and wellā€¦being a guyā€¦you just donā€™t do that type of thing.

I am really disappointed. Was looking to take a more active role in this great event. I would like to extend an invitation to use my place (Camp in the Blue Hills) for any additional meetings that may be held this summer (pool, basketball, volleyball, dayhiking, etc.). Close to Boston and I will provide the beer/food (late August perhaps?).

Anyways, I am truly sorry and look forward to the awesome ideas and plans that I know will be generated by this week-end.

BTWā€¦.heaven and earth could not keep me away from getting a flag to a peak this 9/11. Iā€™m MORE than in for thatā€¦and the Mooseland. šŸ˜› Got everyone there American Flag bandanasā€¦have to out do that this year.

            Just MHO…and for the record…

            I dislike “rankings”.

            Zealot?

Seems to much like a contest.

šŸ’” Couldn’t a person somehow receive a flag under their username that represents the number of years they have participated? Two years…two flags…three years..three flags..etc.

At least that way people can have their “rankings” change from year to year….

            just a thought.

Ok… nothing has been posted in two weeks (just not right IMHO! šŸ˜‰ ) so here it goes.

Just my feeling on this…but….I think it might be appropriate to discuss at the “planning” weekend/day…the appropriateness (god bless spellcheck!) of the level of political discourse in regards to FOT48.

First, it is an election year, and again IMHO, and FWIW (more acroynms please) it is irrelevent to the event itself…although I can see threads/discourse perhaps going off tangent here…particularly…if people with a vested/long time/short time? interest in this event veer in that direction.

Second…well I have no second…just thinking off the top of my head and perhaps my first is irrelevent? šŸ˜®

              Peace.

Not to be a doomsayerā€¦.and donā€™t know if it has been covered.

We should really discuss Sunday as an alternate date (weather). Not so much for schedulingā€¦but how this event handles it. Not sure I am explaining this right. Let me try again.

Events/gatherings what have you, lose initiative if they donā€™t plan for the unexpected. People crave/love to know as much information as possible. In the rare instance that there is lightning storms/meteors, whatever reason a large majority can not hike that day, I think having a plan, even a small one is crucial, especially for the following years (outreach).

I think this is a SMALL issue in the overall scheme of things and 99.9 times out of 100 we will have at least adequate weatherā€¦ā€¦butā€¦

                I love logistics!!

It was already suggested to poll this out. Let’s pick a few dates and have a poll. I nominate 6/26.

                  Greg.
                  I’ll take the under on 6/26. šŸ˜‰

I think a July 4th launch date is pretty reasonable. 2 full months of sign-ups sounds good.

((Had to say all that to stay on topic…b/c))

                    SilentCal to answer your question…

I am betting the over. It opened at 38 and I grabbed that. To me…Superbowls are almost always high scoring. Since 1978 only, 4 games have been under 40 points and those were 37, 39, 39, 36.

I will also take the Patriots but will wait to let that line drop some more…opened at 7 and is now at 6 1/2. Patriots in a blowout. That young QB from Carolina is in for a long day.

If at all possible could we poll the date out?

May 8 and 15 do not work for me. Instructing a training those days. Realize that any date is not ideal for everyone…but hey…have to try.

Actually, May 15 would be appropriate…as I puruse my calendar it is Armed Forces Day. Oh well. Either way I’ll be there physically or in spirit.

                      BTW…won the under again!!

                        Perhaps over zealous.
If anyone one is up for a informal “idea sharing” meeting over a couple of pints in the Boston area I would be up for that as well. Perhaps a Thursday night as not to interfere with week-end plans. I know, off the top of my head…of 300 hundred or so places (misspent youth). All open year round. šŸ˜‰

Perhaps get space/bunks now at Carter? Just a thought…

To all the veterans of WWII and especially Pearl Harbor…here’s to you today!

62 years ago today. December 7, 1941. Never forget!

                                Interesting…IMHO…here’s a different POV.

While I understand people wanting perhaps to do certain peaks every year and …I’ll agree that perhaps some should be able to do this (speaks to tradition)…but I personally think early sign-ups, (outside the public) give the appearance of preferential treatment and down the road a few years from now I think that can lead to some challenges. Alsoā€¦who will decide? I would hate to have to be the one to choose between letā€™s say 3 heart wrenching stories.

Publicity. I was thinking that those who are interested should let their local community paper(s) know what they are doing. Small, home grown papers love this stuff.

I believe the success of this event, outside the actual day of course, is the buy-in from participants. Being part of something. Pre/Post-event gatherings, better overall communications (mentioned before), Frodoā€™s patchesā€¦etcā€¦are IMMHOā€¦what makes people want to come back.

Has an ā€œAll Crewā€ meeting been mentioned yet? It would be niceā€¦again buy-inā€¦if all the crews were to meet up the morning of the event for a memorial service, pep talk, recognizing certain people, whatever. Logistically challenging but I think it could be done.

                                I do enjoy discussing this.

As I am finally unpacked from our big move and all settled in (well ā€¦relatively) I thought Iā€™d write down some more of my thoughts in the interest of keeping the discussion going. As a veteran (Army) I can think of no better day than today (plus I have the day off) to sit back with some Clapton on and just give my $.02. Sorry if it is long or duplicates some already great ideas.

Firstā€¦I was thinking during the sign-up phase in addition to picking/signing up for a peakā€¦a person could sign-up for a ā€œgroupā€. For discussion sakeā€¦letā€™s call them ā€œProvoā€. Ideally this group would be for the people w/o a crew per/ce, people that canā€™t get a crew together, want to meet new people, shy or whatever the reason. They are by themselves but still want to partake in the eventā€¦but again for whatever reason need to be with a group. Once the Provo group reaches letā€™s sayā€¦5-6 people then they are assigned a peak and you could start Provo2, 3 etc.. This gives immediate buy-in and support for the next yearā€¦they might even become their own crew in years to come. I like it as well b/cā€¦.I do believe the majority of sign-ups come with a built in crew behind it (does that make sense). This will allow individuals greater opportunity as well to participate.

Secondā€¦and I think this has been mentioned in one form already. Have a ā€œSpecial Operationsā€ group sign-up. This could be crews willing to hit the peaks not yet signed up for as the event approaches. Yeahā€¦it would be pretty much last secondā€¦but it gives longer availability on popular peaks and speaks more so to the nature of the event (MO anyways). It would probably again boil down to the peaks that were not covered this year, but I for one would be willing to ā€œdo a yearā€ on this and think it is important for other relatively able backpackers to do the sameā€¦while were able. I hope that all made sense.

Lastlyā€¦and this might be out there. For the sign-ups have 4 designations for the peaks. 1. Easy 2. Medium 3. Challenging 4. Difficult or what have you. Have crews sign-up for these designationsā€¦then have a LOTTERY to see what peak you will get for that year. Why I am intrigued by this idea. Well I think again it speaks to the spirit of the eventā€¦it is not so much the peak you get but the participation in the event itself. It mixes it up. While I am sure there are some that would like to do the same peak (tradition)((perhaps waivers??)), I also think some might want the chance to do the peaks that are signed up the quickest and they are shut-out. This gives everyone a fair shot so to speak. Lastlyā€¦..it is an excuse to throw a party! Imagine sometime in July/August having a get together to have the lottery and what peak you get. To me at least I think there are some great opportunities there.

Again sorry so longā€¦I LOVE logistics. Alsoā€¦however it is doneā€¦I will be there for this event!!

                                  Peace.
