I sent you the HTML file at both e-mail addresses. Your main one, and the new one “flags@alpinezone.com” Let me know if you received the file.

You can just send the answer to my e-mail address, rather than fill up this thread.

Yes. I need to go over the procedure with one of computer people who will be in at 1:00 pm today.

I basically need to convert the file from Microsoft Access to Excel to an HTML file. It’s not hard to do, I am just having a bad case of brain-lock right now.

It wouldn’t work for me either. Therefore, I will go with the “Flags on the 48” as well.

By the way, when do you all want to start placing names with mountains. I have my database set up so all I need to do is post my e-mail and collect names. Do you want to want until after the New Year?

I believe the Mission Statement has been tweaked to its fullest potential, so I am locking it down. If anyone has any major objections, please feel free to e-mail me.

I don’t wish to quibble, but I did a search and my post offering my services to the committee and where I use the term “Flags on the 48” for the first time appears on Sept 20th, your message suggesting that we use the phrase “Flags on the 48” as the official slogan appears on Sept 24th.

However, the idea to fly a flag on all 48 peaks was NOT my idea. I ‘m not sure who exactly make the suggestion, but that person really deserves the credit for getting this event started.

I just did another search and “Ken” on Sept 18th first suggested that we put a flag on all 48 peaks.

Experience has taught me as of late that hiking boards can be informative, yet they can also deteriorate into petty squabbling rather quickly without warning. Before we post on other hiking boards, lets have all our logistics voted on thereby eliminating the “Troll’s” ability to pick a fight. If everything has been “lock-down” so to speak, their only option is to do the hike or not.

I have to admit I’m slightly bias since I originally coined the phrase “Flags on the 48” in my initial e-mail to AlpineZone asking for web space. To be honest, I just used the term as a catch phrase and was never expecting to use it as the official slogan. However, since it has become part of the “Public Domain” so to speak, I vote we continue to use it.

That is a tough question. I would like to stay within the grassroots level as long as possible. If, however, we are a month away from the event and we still do not have enough people, we can then reach out beyond the hiking community via the general media (i.e. newspapers, WMUR, etc). We could also write an article for some of the hiking magazines explaining our hike and asking for volunteers.

I like the idea of Peak Coordinators to help in the logistics of this event. I am also still willing to receive e-mails and keep a list via Microsoft Access and then covert it to a HTML file and then send it to AlpineZone for posting on the web. I can manipulate the data in a number of ways that can help keep track of which people want to climb which mountain.

However, I’m not sure when we should start posting the list of mountains and start receiving requests. I still think it is too early and I personally would like to wait until the New Year before assigning mountains to people. Your thoughts?

                        3rd draft

“On September 11th, 2001 the consciousness of United States of America was inexorably altered by an unprovoked and unconscionable act of terrorism so far reaching in its scope, that our country will not soon heal from this devastating wound. Thousands of innocent lives were lost in a fleeting moment as families only now try to piece together their shattered lives and return to some semblance of normalcy.

We in the hiking community would like to honor those fallen heroes by flying the American flag atop of all 48 four thousand foot and greater mountains in New Hampshire next September 14th, in conjunction with the observance of National Remembrance Day. By demonstrating our steadfast unity as Americans and as a hiking community, we hope to express our unwavering support to the families and to the communities whose losses are beyond our comprehension and whose sacrifices will forever remain in our hearts.”

To be perfectly honest, I’m not entirely sure how we arrived at the decision to unfurl a flag on all 48 peaks. Also, we had such a flurry of activity the first couple of days, and now it seems that our enthusiasm has waned a bit. Are we still planning on doing this, or have other interests taken sway?

The plan is to raise the flag for an hour or two and then to remove the flag. Trust me and the others, nothing will be left behind except memories.

You are correct about the inexorable vs. the inexorably. My proof reading totally missed that. I should never proof read my own stuff. Good catch. I will edit it with your recommendations.

I rewrote the original since some issues have been settled. The mission statement will not be settled in one draft, so please write your own and we can address all the issues we wish to include.
