This thread is so we can officially tabulate the peaks that were covered. Please only post once to this thread (unless you covered more than one peak). Also, please only one person from each peak respond.

So far so good! My only thoughts would be how to get the word out to still more people:
Leave a mission statement at some facilities (Pinkham, Highland, the Huts) sometime in advance for people to see.
Leave a mission statement (with a “this will be removed” note on it so nobody thinks we’re littering) at the appropriate trailheads on the day of the event.
And if we can get more than 48 groups signed up, add some of the popular and visible but not official summits, like Hight, Guyot, & Little Haystack.It was a great day for a hike!!! The only flag I could see was the one on Jefferson. I had to use binoculars.

Any suggestion on improvements/changes for next year (optional): The flag on Cannon proved to be very popular…visitors commented on the reason for flying it and thought it was a wonderful gesture. Almost all of them stood to have their pictures taken in front of it. I’d like to make sure for the future that Cannon, Washington and Wildcat ‘D’ which are accessible to the non-hiking public are definitely covered. Kris’ idea of bringing a log book for visitors to sign is great…I should have thought of that. And I also like the idea of the post event get-together…making arrangements in advance with a place like the Mooseland Grill is a good idea.Peak Name: Flume
Short description of rigging and pole system: A fault tolerant, reconfigurable, lightweight pole system. Possibly a bit over-engineered, but it was a fun project with my kids. The pole consisted of 6 sections of 4-foot schedule 40 1 1/4 inch grey bell style PVC. Standard config was 20 feet with 1 spare section. High wind config was 12 feet and doubled the width of the pole. I found that the bell fittings were so snug that the re-enforcement clamps were not needed. Pole used eye-bolts for flag and guy-line attachment. Flag rigged to pole using carabiners.
Any suggestion on improvements/changes for next year (optional): I suggest that we update the mission statement to include some of the text that appears in the press release. In particular, the last part of the following sentence:On September 13, 2003, we are continuing this memorial to unite the hiking community in a show of support to all of the families and communities who suffered tragic losses that day, and to all of the people who have died serving this great country to preserve our freedom.

Short description of rigging and pole system: Four pieces of Aluminum angle iron in three foot sections connected with screws and wingnuts (only 2 lbs!)
Any suggestion on improvements/changes for next year (optional): I agree with promoting this a little earlier, although I think it was about right this year. Probably to get more participation, we need to increase the breadth of promotional activity. Encourage more links from hiking-related sites (there are many) and take advantage of the mentions on radio, newspaper and even TV by contacting the folks who mentioned us this year and asking them to announce the name, website and how to participate.Otherwise, the whole event was excellent. Short description of rigging and pole system: 15 foot long, 2″ dia PVC cut into (3) 5′ sections. Each joint supported with (4) 18″ long steel rods fastened with duct tape. Multiple nylon guy lines.
Any suggestion on improvements/changes for next year (optional): Post flyers at visitor centers, huts, Highland center, Pinkham, Trailheads, REI, EMS, any other hiking related store that will allow it, 2 months in advance. Organize trips thru hiking clubs. I know a few AMC trip leaders and I will try and see if they will run a few trips next Sept 11th. Keep the word of mouth going over the next year. Over the winter/spring it would be great if an article or 2 were published in an Outdoor magazine like AMC Outdoors, Appalachia, Backpacker, etc. I plan on contacting Mike Lanza who writes for several of those. I will also contact Katherine Wroth and Madeleine Eno who write for AMC Outdoors. Lets all work hard and make next year even more special…Peak Name: Tecumseh
Short description of rigging and pole system: 20 foot long, 2″ dia PVC cut into (4) 5′ sections. Each joint had piece of EMT inside PVC for added strength. Drilled and bolted through both poles. Supported with multiple nylon guy lines. Pole was overbuilt for this years wind conditions but was a redesign based on last years experience on North Twin.

Free beer. Just kidding…but not really. :beer:I think a mid-year or perhaps summertime “gathering” to focus, get hyped up and hell just hang out would be cool. Also a pre-trip, next year, type of event would be great for all interested participants since it could be that Friday night.
A quasi-sign-up sheet listing all 48 for groups to carry for the following year? I am probably not saying this right, but, people you meet on the summits could, “tenatively”…(no guarntees) sign-up for the next year. At the very least you can get contact info (email).
Perhaps having one designated flag go to a different peak each year? It would be cool 48 years from now (well perhaps less) if it could be said, “This flag has stood on every 48 4,000 peak for this event.

Short description of rigging and pole system: Store bought tarp poles doubled up for extended height. 3 nylon guy lines. (I liked my design from last year better, but the weight trade off was too good to pass up.)
Any suggestion on improvements/changes for next year (optional): All the coordinators have done a fantastic job. I would just continue to pursue new avenues of exposure. I attempted to help you guy’s through radio media, but recieved no responses. -
