      I haven’t recieved any more information other than Zealand Road will be closed at Hwy 302 prior to the 9/11 hike. I will be taking another route to the summit of Zealand this year. I favor the Ethan Pond Trail to Zeacliff Trail to the Twinway to the summit. Not a difficult hike over all just alot of miles and a long day. Works out to almost 9 miles and book time is estimated at about 7 hours. This means we leave the trail head at 5 am… allowing plenty of time to reach the summit by noon. Any other suggestions would be seriously concidered as well but this seems the best alternative so far.

        While you would be missed the previous evening, I’d head up early Saturday afternoon and spend the night at Ethan Pond in the shelter or on the tent platforms (thus the need to get to this popular spot early in the afternoon). That gets all that elevation gain out of the way. When you start in the morning it’s entirely level all the way to the Zeacliff Trail; you’ll fly all the way to that trail (and you will LOVE coming out on Whitewall). It does cost to stay at Ethan Pond, a nominal price, so in the morning clear off the platform and stash all your stuff, taking just a day pack with the flag up to the summit.

          Great idea Michael… I may end up traveling solo up Zealand, Trevor may be working.
          I can’t imagine anyone else wanting to put in this many miles for a day hike. It makes sense to stay at Ethan Pond (maybe even get up to Guyot) Saturday night.
          I am very excited to be traveling any different trail to the summit!! I have the entire weekend and Monday off and would like to bag the Bonds while I’m up there, weather permitting.
          Lots of options….so many trails… so little time.

            In that case, I would go for two nights at Guyot Shelter. Start up from Lincoln Woods wicked early Saturday morning and head over Bondcliff and Bond, then relax at Guyot. Sunday fly the flag over and Zealand, enjoy the open views of Mt. Guyot, and catch the sunset on West Bond. Monday morning head back out.

            Weather permitting. 😉

              What Micheal said! Guyot is a great place to stay. Ethan pond is the really long way to Zealand but his reccomendation for staying at Ethan Pond is sweet. Pucknuts, I believe is staying at Galehead hut. That’s always an option as well. I’ll fire you an e-mail on Thursday though to let you know where you stand roadwise.

                Funny you should mention heading out Lincoln Woods!!!
                I am fairly certain this will be my plan for the weekend of the 9/11/05 Memorial Hike.
                Friday night…Broken Branch Campground
                Saturday early…Hike the(3)Bonds
                Saturday night… Guyot Shelter
                Sunday… Zealand
                Sunday night…Guyot Shelter
                Monday… Homeward bound
                Is there still someone at the Guyot shelter that late in the season?
                Not exactly a sissy hike… 😮

                  Yes, the caretakers at most shelters or tent platforms are there until Columbus day. Then it is cool days, cold nights and free.

                    Go to the shelter before you do West Bond. It’s a short distance from the shelter spur to the summit spur along the Bondcliff Trail. Claim your spot and settle in, and just take a light pack up West Bond for sunset, which on Sat 9/10/05 will be 7:06pm.

                      Arriving late on Saturday however you may not get a spot in the shelter. A very good idea to bring a tent. Shelter holds about 12 persons and there are about six tent platforms. There are overflow tentsites up on the ridge but I believe you need to check with the caretaker first before you camp there. Guyot Shelter to Zealand Mt. is a nice hike. Guyot peak itself is a gem but the col between Guyot and Zealand I remember to be fairly steep on both sides. Do you still need a Zealand Road update?

                        I’m thinking the Zealand Road update will be something like this…. the road is closed. 😮
                        If not send me an update but either way I think I will hike the Bonds before Sunday. I’m gonna try to get Friday afternoon off and hopefully make Guyot by Friday evening… we’ll see.
                        Other wise I’ll be at Broken Branch (not beaver brook 🙄 ) Campground Friday night.
                        I’m getting so excited about this hike… it will be a challenge. :flag:
                        I like that I hopefully will bag the 3 Bonds and Guyot in one weekend… woohoo.

                          As far as I know Artex will be spending the night of the 10th at Guyot…

                          and I know for a fact you’ll find me, Sarah and Lendawg up there as well.

                          But we’re coming in over Hale and Zealand 1st. 😀
