I updated the summit signs for this year:

      Microsoft Word
      Adobe PDF

      Thoughts?

Looks excellent. Good font size, easy to read, and eye catching. Any plans to add the “flags” site logo to the top or bottom header?

Now, to be picky: The date on the Liberty photo and the date in the caption don’t jive. An erroneous date in the camera, or was it really climbed that Friday?

Excellent. Last year I printed mine out and for $1 had it laminated at Staples. I then punched a hole and used a cord to tether it to one of my flagpole guy lines so anyone could read it easily.

I seem to remember an old posting talking about the wrongness of the date in the photo…

“White House” should not be quoted.

And one other thing – it bothered me last year to say “a horrific terrorist attack on September 11, 2001” … I really think that as a historic event, it should be “the horrific terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001″

I’ve incorporated the suggested changes and edited the image to remove the date on the sign as well as here:

I took some liberty with the summit sign text posted. I hope you don’t mind, not looking to offend anyone, writing is a hobby of mine and I don’t profess to be good at it. I respectfully submit this to you all.

The “Flags on the 48” event was established in response to the horrific terrorist attacks that took place in America on September 11, 2001.
Three days after the attacks several regular on-line posters to the AMC Hiker Journal message forum banded together and planned a hike the following day. Intent on raising the largest American flag they could find from the summit of Mt. Liberty.

On September 15, 2001, six hikers met at the White House Trailhead armed with a 96 square foot flag, 30 feet of PVC tubing, 100 feet of rope, 2 rolls of duct tape, and a wealth of pride and determination. As a gesture of sympathy for such a horrific loss, the American flag was raised on the summit of Mt. Liberty, paying tribute to the thousands of innocent people who perished in the attacks. This patriotic display received such tremendous amounts of positive feedback that a committee was formed to establish a larger, annual memorial. The “Flags on the 48” event was given life.

On September 14, 2002 and again on September 13, 2003, several hundred patriotic and compassionate hikers embarked on a collective journey to raise American flags on all 48 of the 4,000+ foot summits in New Hampshire. This tribute, to the sacrifice of life and our strength of unity as a nation, remains small in the scope of the enormity of all that has been lost. However, the feedback from participants, as well as observers, continues to be overwhelmingly positive and this small tribute has gained tremendous support.

On this day a united community of hikers continues to honor the families and communities that have suffered the ultimate and tragic losses and all the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who have served and sacrificed to preserve our liberty, by raising Old Glory. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

              No harm intended.

                My thought is:
Dirt_girl’s version is superior, particularly towards the beginning. Sorry Greg πŸ˜€ . My English professor would be proud of her. πŸ˜€

I really liked it – it flows well. A few little things caught my eye, and these are just how I’d do it, not mandates and barely suggestions. Though I think I’m right on the punctuation. πŸ˜€

No commas in the “Three days after …” sentence.

Is it correct to show “compassion for … loss” as opposed to sympathy?

I’d add “event”: The “Flags on the 48” event was given life.

Instead of “… lost. Yet the feedback …” I would do “… lost; however, the feedback …”

No comma after “continues to honor”
Add a comma after “tragic losses”
                  No comma after “Armed Forces”

MichaelJ, thanks for your input and kudos to you for paying attention in English class. I made the changes and it’s even smoother than before. Now….how you gonna get all the red ink off your screen? πŸ˜€

                        Dirt_girl,
                        next to last paragraph,
                        “overwhelming” should be “overwhelmingly”

                        It’s getting better and better.

And how about “continues to be overwhelmingly positive and this small tribute has gained tremendous support.”

Now that’s the spirit! You guys are so awesome! :flag:
I am so loving all this input. I have edited one more time to add what you suggested.
I am still very interested in what the original 6 would think of this alteration?
                              Nice work guys. Thanks.

The summit sign was an adaptation of the History page as written by Frodo. We should wait for his input before changing the live documents (summit sign files and History page).
