I’m headed to the Whites this (Sat.) morning. I’ll be spending the night at one of those campgrounds off the Kanc. I don’t think I’ll have reception there, so that means the last time I’ll get a chance to check this site will be probably this afternoon.

        See you on the mountain!

I’m not sure you understood me. I’m leaving at 7:00, but I’m fine with you leaving at 8:00. That’s why I wanted to know who’s with you.

I’m still leaving from the Pine Bend Brook Trailhead. Since you’re going separately, it’s up to you where you leave from.

Yes, I’m Cumulus, and that picture is me.

A group moves as fast as its slowest hiker. This is why I schedule an early start; you never know how fast the slowest hiker is going to be. I remember one year right after we got the flag set up I looked at my watch and it was 11:59.

However, if you want to start later, that’s fine; what I really need help with is setting up and taking down the flag, not so much transporting it. I just ask that you give me a list of people who are starting later so I don’t unnecessarily wait for them.

Pine Bend Brook Trail it is, then. We’ll meet at the trailhead on the Kancamagus Highway at 7:00. I see that the North Tripyramid crew is also going up PBBT, but they’re leaving later, as they have less far to go.

I’ll bring the flag setup. I’ll distribute things to shlep up the mountain at the trailhead.

Keep in mind that you’ll be sitting on a 4000′ peak for a couple hours, so you’ll be colder than you would be if you were hiking at the same elevation for the same time, so make sure you pack enough warm clothing.

Cumulus , I just read you have done this hike on this peak for several yrs.

Yes, this will be my eighth year. I just went over my old reports, and we’ve gone up Sabbaday Brook Trail twice, the South Slide twice, the North Slide once, Scaur Ridge Trail once, and Pine Bend Brook Trail once, while we’ve gone down Sabbaday Brook Trail twice, the South Slide once, the North Slide never, Scaur Ridge Trail thrice, and Pine Bend Brook Trail once.

I’m reluctant to schedule Sabbaday Brook Trail, because we can’t know in advance if the brook’s going to be high, and I’m reluctant to schedule the North Slide, because that might be too difficult for some, but any of the others are fine. If someone coming has a preference, let me know. I’m kind of leaning towards Pine Bend Brook Trail, since I haven’t brought the flag up there since 2010.

For seven years running now I have raised a flag on Middle Tripyramid for Flags on the 48. This time one other hiker signed up for MT, a guy named Bob whom I first met at the trailhead, but who lives less than 20 miles from me back in Connecticut. We went up the South Slide and down Scaur Ridge, starting and ending at Livermore Trailhead.

The weather was good all day. There was no rain and it was much warmer than it has been in other years. The only downside weather-wise was a lack of wind for most of the time, which wasn’t good for the flag, but that changed near the end of our stay up on the summit.

This was the first time on the Tripryamids for Bob. I think he said they were his 28th and 29th NH4Ks.

The South Slide served up some great views for us, and we were on the summit of Middle well before noon. We set up the flag without any trouble and hung around talking to the dozens of people who came through (including a NH4K finisher), and offering up cookies (from me) and hot dogs (from Bob, who had hiked up a little stove).

We could see the flag on North Tripyramid by going down the trail just a little ways, but we didn’t see any flags on any other peaks. There was no flyby this year.

After two we took down the flag, and headed out over North Tripyramid (passing the North crew heading towards Middle) and down Scaur Ridge Trail. It was another successful memorial, and a couple of new peaks for Bob.

                  Here are the pictures.

                    BobSaidi:

Going up the South Slide and going down Scaur Ridge is good. I don’t want to schedule an ascent up the North Slide in case we get some last minute hikers who wouldn’t be comfortable with that. However, if it ends up just being us then we can switch plans at the trailhead (which is exactly what happened last year).

We’ll meet at 7:00 at Livermore Trailhead. That might seem early, but the last time we went up the South Slide, if I remember correctly, we started at 7:30 and got the flag up at 11:59. So I’ve been scheduling it for 7:00 to give us a cushion.

I’ve (mostly) vegetarian, so I’ll pass on the Freedom Dogs, but feel free to bring them.

I see you’re from Glastonbury. I’ve probably hiked more miles in Glastonbury than in any other town on Earth.

It looks like we’ll have a big crew this year. (Last year it was just me. Other years I’ve had from one to five people with me.) Five people have signed up, and two have contacted me (and I’m not sure if they’re both among those signed up). One of you said he’s bringing a group of 10, so we’ll have more than enough.

With this many people I don’t want to pick a route which might change at the last minute, which means Sabbady Brook is out, because I wouldn’t want to use that if the brook is high. I also don’t want to bring possible newbies up the North Slide, especially if it’s going to be wet. (Which is unfortunate. This will be my nineth time on the Tripyramids, and I still haven’t been on the North Slide. I almost went last year, but everything was wet and I was worried about missing the time.)

Lets go up the South Slide, and down Scaur Ridge (which we did in 2011). We’ll meet at the Livermore Trailhead at 7:00.

I’ll bring the setup (flag, poles, and rope) I’ve used every year.

Did I lose my crew? The names have disappeared from the peaks list, but I haven’t heard anything from either of you.

I heard back from Kaity, and she used “we”, so I’m assuming that Zach is coming with her. She didn’t have a preference for trail, so what I’m going to do is set a time of 7:00 at the Livermore Trailhead in Waterville Valley, and we’ll decide there which trail to take. My idea is that if the weather’s good we’ll take the North Slide, if the weather’s so-so we’ll take the South Slide, and if the weather’s bad we’ll take Scaur Ridge Trail.

7:00 might seem kind of early, but in 2011 we met at that trailhead at 7:30 and just got the flag up with only a minute to spare, so I’d like a little more leeway this time, especially if we are going to go up the North Slide.

I’m still trying to recruit more people. It’s not unlikely; most years I’ve had people sign up at the last minute.

I can confirm Middle Tripyramid, but I can’t confirm the blackhawk. We saw no sign of a helicopter this year. Of course, we were usually in a cloud and the sound of the flag in that wind would have drowned out any copter flyby.

I can confirm Middle Tripyramid. When we get the flag set up we checked the time and it was 11:59.

I saw the flag on Passaconaway with my monocular. I’m less certain, but I think I also saw the flag on Osceola. We talked with the North Tripyramid crew afterwards, although I didn’t actually see the flag. Later at the Common Man we met John Saunders, who’d been on Bond, and he showed us a video of the helicopter, which included the copter passing right behind the flag.
